4 years of open source

rvjansen
As the availability of NetRexx as free and open source is also a kind of birthday,  I would like to remind us that it is already 4 years ago, the 8th of June, 2011, that we received the source of NetRexx from IBM. Since then, there have been 4 releases, which translates roughly to one every year.

The development team has been able to keep NetRexx running on modern JVM infrastructure, as release 3.04 (of which Release Candidate 2 will be published tonight) shows, and was able to improve NetRexx with each new version. It is now faster and more dependable than it already as. It also has a modest set of new functionality.

For release 4.00, planned for later this year, we have more ambitious plans. For these plans we need assistance. Test cases need to be organized and documentation needs to be written. I know a few of you on the list that can code like champs, but do not want to commit code to the repository. This needs to change.

From the start of the development work for version 4.00 we will have a deployment pipeline in place with automated builds, tests and packaging. There now is an opportunity to contribute in another form, by offering machine capacity on one of your computers. If you are willing to define a userid for RexxLA on those, your computer can function as a slave for the RexxLA Jenkins build system. The contribution in cycles and bandwidth is modest, and can be tailored to your wishes. You will get free builds on you machine in return, and a honorable mention in the documents and on the website, if you want.

In the same fashion you can contribute to the development of Open Object Rexx.

Please let us know if you want to contribute.

best regards,

René Jansen
project manager, NetRexx Project, RexxLA.
