Copyright notices

Hi All,

Now that we're discussing this (off)topic I thought I might ask for some advice.

For NetRexxDE I'm puttying the following on every file present in Satguru's original
sources:

/*
 * NetRexxDE.nrx - NetRexx jEdit Plugin implementation
 * Original Copyright (C) 2000 Satguru Srivastava
 * Parts Copyright (C) 2008 David Requena
 *
 * standard FSF notice 'This program is free software; you can ...' follows

Do you think this is OK?

I spent a few days rebuilding the svn repo so a checkout of revision one will
yield all code subject to Satguru's copyright. At any time a diff between a
given revision and revision 1 will reveal code copyrighted by latter
contributors (just me up to now). The repo history shows which code is whose
copyright.

Is this the correct approach?

 Based on some work I had to do in a previous employ; the consensus at that time was the following:

• Leave the original copyright intact and add yours ahead of it.
• Add the year to the end of the copyright statement.
  
• Every time you change your work update the copyright statement to contain the oldest and newest dates only.
  

So from your example above:

/*
 * NetRexxDE.nrx - NetRexx jEdit Plugin implementation
 *
 * Copyright (C) David Requena. 2008, 2010.
 * Copyright (C) 2000 Satguru Srivastava
 *
 * standard FSF notice 'This program is free software; you can ...' follows

Remember though; IANAL & YMMV.
