Fwd: Re: Current State of the SHAP (Secure Hardware Agent Platform) package

ThSITC
Forwarding this only for Your info on the matter of SHAP.

As seen in my previous mail to the group, I did directly contact th University Professor there
to clear the status of SHAP, and possible good follow ups for NetRexx in general.

From the info below, WeAll shall however wait now whether and how
the University in Dresden does respond.

Have a nice weekend, all, anyway ...

I didn't pay attention. I thought it was going to all.  Feel free to distribute this.

I don't see any value to approaching the JOP project about NetRexx -- it is just a sideshow for them and doesn't advance their cause.  I've been watching JOP for about 10 years.  As it stands it is thrown together from "proof of principle" pieces  which resembles sausage making.  Prof Shoeberl is trying for serious funding to bring it together.

It is perfectly possible  to adapt JOP as it stands for use with NetRexx, but it will be painful in its current state.  It requires enough hardware knowledge to work with Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs).  I intend to wait until it shows more signs of viability before attacking it.  But I'm older than you and this may never happen.

George,

1.) Many thanks for Your instant reply. Very interesting.
2.) Is there any specific reason why You didn't also copy You reply to the ibm-netrexx group?
3.) Do You think it's worthwhile to follow this up, at the current minute, to broaden the recognition of NetRexx?

I'm copying Kermit and Rene here only, as I don't know Your answer to point 2. above.

Thomas.

Thomas,

As you probably know, SHAP has made some very arresting claims (http://shap.inf.tu-dresden.de/?n=2) about Java processors suitable for robust applications, and I downloaded it and played a bit.  As far as I can see it is frozen at an early phase with no visible progress in the last two or three years.

Martin Schoeberl (http://www.imm.dtu.dk/~masca/) is the best known researcher in this area and inventor of JOP (Java Optimized Processor).
Dr Shoeberl's work with JOP has led to a much more ambitious project related to Safety Critical Java.  Should this come to fruition it would be a highly attractive NetRexx target.  It is possible that NetRexx might become known as a language suitable for Safety Critical computing.

Hi George Hovey,

As I'm just re-sorting my ancient mails, I did came along Your reply as of 2011-10-18 to a question
I did raise about Your SHAP package ...

At those time You mentioned http://shap.inf.tu-dresden.de for the summary: You also did mention
that work is still in progress.

Do You have got any updates from them about the status of SHAP or shall I (as I am a native german speaker)
contact them directly ?

Why I am so interested is, because You did mention that they did attempt to define&implement a scalable,
multiprocessing JVM.

Now, as the number of processors available even in ordinary PC's/Tablets/SmartPhones seem to double
every 1-2 Years, I shall be interested, again.

Also, when the IBM NetRexx Group shall be interested, I could go into direct contact with them,
and then report (in english) my findings.

But maybe others do have already the current status (Rony, or others, maybe) ?

Anyway, when somebody in this group does know more about their proceedings, pls. let us know.

Thanks in advance,
Thomas Schneider
