My speech about NetRex at the IBM Developers Day in Linz, Austria (some time ago).

ThSITC
I'm glad to report that my speech about *NetRexx* some time ago in Linz, Austria, is now available at the IBM sites at:

ibm.com/developerworks/mydeveloperworks/groups/service/html/communityview?communityUuid=7ea73af5-4780-4919-b5ff-60aed410e290

The funny thing has been, that at this meeting nearly nobody of the IBM ISV vendors present (mainly former AS/400 ones, nowadays i-series ones)
did even know about NetRexx at all. As well as all IBM representatives from Germany, Austria, and also the Tech Center of Switzerland.... :-(

I do only hope, that when I did quote 3 chapters of Mike's NetRexx
overview in nrl3.def without explicitely stating all the copyright issues,
(nowadays going from IBM *to* RexxLA) I didn't make any harm to the
ever growing community of NetRexx Fan's.

Just as a summary, there have been more than 40 interested Austrian parties attending, and I have been lucky to speak at the first day ....

See you all.
Thomas Schneider.

Congratulations, Thomas.

And wrt the as400 guys not knowing about NetRexx... I think of IBM as
a group of loosely gathered "islands". Back at a time when IBM PSP was
going out of its way to promote OS/2 Warp, I heard the worst of
comments about it from... no, not Microsoft, but an IBM AIX techie
from IBM.

That doesn´t happen at Microsoft. You don´t hear Microsoft Office
execs talking bad about other MS products.

Turf wars and lack of a cohesive "message" kills IBM. It´s a
consulting firm now, which sells hardware and software on the side,
that lets it stay afloat, but there is hardly an "IBM speech" or
cohesive, powerful message (as was Sun´s speech towards ´open
standards´) or Microsoft´s "Windows Everywhere").

ThSITC
Hello Fernando, *and all*:

I did talk with many IBM employees the past year (as I am now an official
IBM ISV, which is an *IBM Indepenent Software Vendor*).

IBM ISV's take now up ALL the middleware Business of IBM
IBM does no longer even have SALES REP's for the middleware. They
Focus on:

    a) Major accounts (i.E. zOS accounts)
    b) Software and Consulting Business

All the *minor hardware sales*, as IBM i-series, power 6 & 7, etc is
*delegated* to IBM Partners (Business Partners and/or ISV's)!

However, IBM is doing an EXCELLENT Job in developing new market areas,
and the overall strategy: Let us build a SMARTER PLANET ! :-)

The SMARTER PLANET is our Earth, by the way ...

I'm continually meeting here in Vienna with IBM people

Very concise,  very strategic.

*BUT* :

IBM is concentrating obviously, to CONVERT any former CSP (Cross System
Product) and VISUAL AGE usage to IBM EGL, the IBM Enterprise
Generation Language (I think maintained by the Rational Rose Department
of IBM), and I do also think, that that is one of the major reason why
NetRexx
is and ha been  *dead ended product* within IBM! This is, of course,
personal opinion.

Kind greetings,
from currently dark Vienna,

Massa Thomas..
