Whew! I have coalesced all the various
commentary into a single (and rambling) document, and I have
extracted at a very high level the following issues (in no
particular order):
* Should NetRexx be self-contained? That is, should the NetRexx deliverable include a compiler, obviating the need for Oracle's javac (or anyone else's) compiler? * Should the NetRexx installer be platform independent? That is, should the installation process avoid the vagaries of Win/Lin/Mac and be a "mostly pure" Java task? * Should there be consideration (and specific installers) for Beginners (Eclipse, JEdit) and for Power Users (JAR delivery only)? There are many more lower-level topics, but it would seem that these bigger issues need to be addressed before focusing on the "million little details." I have not considered the "emit byte code" versus "emit Java source code" topic, especially since that didn't seem (to me) to be an installation-specific issue. And, if I have have overlooked (or de-emphasized) your favorite installation hot-button, please feel free to call me out on it! This is the time to have that conversation. After a bit of clean-up and reformatting, I would like to make my "rambling document" generally available. It will be just a flat text file, but where should it go? As has been stated over and over again: there is absolutely no reason to allow for the attachment of files to this list! Moreover; this thread demonstrates that there is no justification for doing so, as a document (http://goo.gl/9lGLs) can be posted to Google Docs. (or any number of other free document hosting services) and simply referenced within any note via a hyperlink. That's the whole point of the World Wide Web after all; linking relevant documents together. Denying the ability to attach files has the added benefit of protecting the members of this list from the exposure to viruses and other malware which often accompany said attachments.

But we lose the right to see a 46 MB 1200-dpi PDF file full of asterisks about a certain program parser. ;) FC _______________________________________________ Ibm-netrexx mailing list [hidden email] Online Archive : http://ibm-netrexx.215625.n3.nabble.com/ |

Writing a software with only ASTERISKS is meaningless (for me)
Whilst I did LOVE ASTERIX, asnd OBELIX, when I have been young, I o nowadays concentrate on: Automated Computer Languse Trasnlatations. I.e. PL/I to COBOL, and or Java COBOL to PL/I, Net>Rexx, or Java etc etc My PP Projetc is *my last attempt* to implement a UNIVERSAL Compiler, knwon as UNCOL, when I did study mathematics decades ago, and the then said story was: INFEASABLE ! I'm, currently, trying to proove: FEASABLE! We all will see :-) ========================================================= Am 27.09.2011 01:13, schrieb Tom Maynard: > Alan Sampson<[hidden email]> wrote: > >>> a...PDF file full of >>> asterisks >>> >> Exacly! > I'm sure it would only be half asterisks. > > Tom. > > > Sent from my Motorola ATRIX™ 4G on AT&T > _______________________________________________ > Ibm-netrexx mailing list > [hidden email] > Online Archive : http://ibm-netrexx.215625.n3.nabble.com/ > > -- Thomas Schneider (Founder of www.thsitc.com) Member of the Rexx Languge Asscociation (www.rexxla.org) Member of the NetRexx Developer's Team (www.netrexx.org) _______________________________________________ Ibm-netrexx mailing list [hidden email] Online Archive : http://ibm-netrexx.215625.n3.nabble.com/
