No Java 6 on Apple at the moment ?

Sometimes in the past days my MacOSX laptop with Mountain Lion has no Java anymore, although I have
never deinstalled it, nor am I aware of the system asking me to deinstall or deactivate it. There is
a popup that has a link for downloading Java 6 for Apple, however another dialog appears, that there
is none and that one should try it at another time.

Is there anyone else (Apple users) affected by that? If so, what is the "story"/explanation of this
somewhat surprising and weird behaviour of Apple?

there is no java in the standard distribution anymore. If you just type in "java", you will be guided to a download.

these are two separate actions; first, java was removed from the default install, apparently after apple decided to wind down the java development team and give their work on integration with Aqua to OpenJDK. Also, when dropping DVD as a distribution mechanism, they needed to leave out stuff; java and X were dropped.

Any mention of java triggers a download action, however.

Now also, after the  'scaremongering' as you call it, the plugin that enables safari to start a java applet, has been removed. When clicking the 'missing plugin' button, another download is triggered. So there is java on mountain lion, only you have to endure some delays the first time you use it.

All in all, I do think it is good that Apple's idiosyncratic implementation has gone to OpenJDK. The dialog 'do you assume the responsibility to run this applet' is a nuisance and not really fair to the sandbox & code signing design, but of course one bad implementation ruins the reputation.

thank you very much!

The problem seems to have been that I updated the laptop to mountain lion, which in effect removed
Java. Running BSF4ooRexx on MacOSX then prompted a dialog that informed me that no Java is available
and the presented link did not lead to a successful download of Java.

Running just "java" on the command line as you have suggested, then triggered the download an
installation of Java 6.
