I have difficulty to connect to kenai - which is rather annoying around a releasedate. Anyone else the same problem?

Yes, as the hostname does not correspond to the certificate; for this reason the netrexx.org site tells one to accept the certificate anyway.

Re: Is this manual obsolete?

alansam
I just downloaded the RedBook and I don't see a "this.List(5)" anywhere in the document, so you may have a transcription error.  I think the code should just be:

  LstWho = List(5) -- define a List Box

While IBM dropped native support for Java on VM some time ago, the basic principles described in the RedBook are probably still good with regard to NetRexx programing; albeit a little outdated.  Based on the date of the publication however some things in Java itself have changed so you'll probably get a name collision with the java.util.List class and the java.awt.List class too.  Try adding:

import java.awt.List

before the first "Class" statement in the program or explicitly define  LstWho as a java.awt.List object:

  LstWho = java.awt.List(5) -- define a List Box

For what it's worth, I copied the code for AboutFrame from the RedBook and have been able to compile and run it under Mac OS X.

Thanks, Allen, that worked perfectly.

It was my hacking that tried the this.List; the original was just List(5).

Alan,

Could you send me your copy of the working AboutFrame.nrx? I cut and pasted the various pieces from the manual and I think I got it jumbled. Where does the "main" method go? After the AboutFrame class? Did you find a copy you could download in it's entirety?

TIA

Re: AboutFrame.nrx

alansam
In reply to this post by kenner
Kenneth,

The main method should go anywhere after the class AboutFrame but before any subsequent class statements (else it will become the main for that class instead.)  I pt mine directly after the class's properties directives.

I didn't find any useful downloadable versions on the IBM web site.  The download they supply is a VMARC package and you'd need a VM system to unpack it.  (Even then it wouldn't help.  As I mentioned; IBM have discontinued native support Java for z/VM (although you can still run Java under Linux or z/OS under z/VM so all is not lost.)

Here's my copy of the code:

/* NetRexx */

options replace format comments java crossref savelog symbols binary

--import java.awt.List

RE: Is this manual obsolete?

That’s an interesting question: Was the IBM copyright for the Redbook given away along with the software? Or would it have to be a complete rewrite?

Hello all there,

   any PLANS to update the REDBOOK (in a forseeable future).

In particular, the AWT examples shall be replace by SWINGX (personal opinion) :-),

Alan, *no fight's* please, just a suggestion, *and* a comment!

Thanks, Allen, that worked perfectly.

It was my hacking that tried the this.List; the original was just List(5).

I just downloaded the RedBook and I don't see a "this.List(5)" anywhere in the document, so you may have a transcription error.  I think the code should just be:

  LstWho = List(5) -- define a List Box

Try adding:

import java.awt.List

before the first "Class" statement in the program or explicitly define  LstWho as a java.awt.List object:

  LstWho = java.awt.List(5) -- define a List Box

For what it's worth, I copied the code for AboutFrame from the RedBook and have been able to compile and run it under Mac OS X.

I'm trying to learn using the sample in chapter 5 called AboutFrame.nrx but it will not compile.

Hello ALAN (and all)

As IBM has discontinued NetRexx support by their own, and are planning
also to remove the Netrexx site from ibm AWD, I do assume that the
open source release of IBM's NetRexx to REXXLA will allow us (anybody)
to ENHANCE this very important RED-Book, written originally by IBM employees, as far as I do know, as PART of this OPEN SOURCING Project....

Rene, could you please comment on this issue (AFTER the NetRexxC 3.01
release, please).

My personal opiniion is that RE-WRITING all this stuff would be beyound our
current capacity, but when we should update it to the current state of the art,
I'm herewith offering my help (when wanted/needed at all)

As I mentioned; IBM have discontinued native support for Java in z/VM so in my opinion I don't think they'll consider revising this particular RedBook.  To be honest, in that the book is almost 13 years old I'm a little surprised it's still available for download.

Hello Alan,
   I'm referencing this RED-Book on www.Rexx2Nrx.com, and I do think this link should be still valid.

  But for sure, there is progress underway to move all this stuff to org.netrexx (hopefully)

Sincerley,
Thomas.
