On a related topic you should also monitor this: http://www.fsf.org/news/oracle-v-google. There are fears in the industry this this is just the start of Oracle's attack on commercial uses of Java and some industry watchers are advocating moving away from Java based solutions due to the FUD this law suit has created. Several years ago an old friend who was working for Oracle said the company name stood for "Organization Run by an As**ole Called Larry Ellison". Doesn't sound like much has changed. I guess "Organization Run Amok with Corporate Lawyers Everywhere" works, too. -Chip- _______________________________________________ Ibm-netrexx mailing list [hidden email] |

FUD indeed. The FSF acknowledged in an email to me -after I complained about the wording of their communication linking to that ages-old "java-trap" article which was written before Sun released Java under a GPL license- that OpenJDK is indeed GPL code, and that they should "mention in more in future communications".
Here´s he truth: Oracle will continue contributing back Java 7 and Java 8 code to the open source OpenJDK project. "Oracle will work with the OpenJDK code base and the OpenJDK community like Sun did. We will continue to develop the JDK in the open under a GPL license. We welcome the cooperation and contribution of any member of the community - individuals as well as organizations - who would like to be part of moving the most widely used software platform forward."
The amount of FUD I´ve seen the last couple of weeks is mind-blowing. Including an article from a financial publication where one of its pundits said JavaME isn´t open source. Well I guess they didnt read about PhoneME (J2ME under a GPL license).
RedHat is also hiring people to work on OpenJDK, so Java is NOT going away anytime soon... --- *caniszczyk* want to work on open source and OpenJDK? #redhati s hiring in Toronto http://is.gd/fdAXH ---- September 10, from Mark Reinhold: "To be clear: No, Oracle does not plan to abandon OpenJDK, and yes, work on JDK 7 (and 8 ...) will be done in the open as before"

For a calmer view of this see http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/30/technology/30oracle.html . One nugget: the groundwork for this suit was laid by Sun before Oracle was involved.
