Dr. Dobb's,: A Look at the Main JVM Languages Today

Jeff Hennick

A Look at the Main JVM Languages Today

February 14, 2012

http://drdobbs.com/jvm/232600853

Good news: The very first one is NetRexx!

Bad news: This is the whole entry, together with the cover of TNL,

NetRexx

NetRexx was the first attempt to create a scripting language that would reduce a lot of the syntactical ceremony in Java. Released as a free product but as closed source, NetRexx was initially popular until it became clear that IBM was not going to keep moving it forward or open up the project. As a result, NetRexx is all but dead today.

Perhaps some subscriber with credentials should write a letter to them, pointing out that NetRexx is now open source with some substantial support by the community.  They might print it.

Sure they should at least publish a "Correct our facts" notice stating that IBM did indeed open-source NetRexx at last.

Wouldn't that be your bone Fernando? :-)

They didnt even bother to join this list to ask about the community
and status of the project...

Since RexxLA is the current owner of NetRexx and was instrumental in
getting the source released, perhaps a letter could come from RexxLA?  Rene?

I have reacted earlier but my post is 'waiting for moderation' - I
don't want to do any 'official' type of reaction because I think I know
the target audience and it would not be impressed. Instead I have
pointed out open sourcing by IBM, the netrexx.org site, the community
maintaining it, abundance of examples on rosetta and efficient usage of
tokens; it might be good if some of the others also reacted.

best regards,

René.

I have submitted the following comment to DrDobb's in both current JVM
pieces.  It is "awaiting moderation."

Reports of the death of NetRexx have been greatly exaggerated.

In Sept. '11, IBM finally released it as FOSS to RexxLA (Rexx Language
Association, RexxLA.org and NetRexx.org ).

A minor update release 3.00 under the new license has been issued.  A
lively mailing list is archived at http://ibm-netrexx.215625.n3.nabble.com/

 From RexxLA.org : "NetRexx 3.01 planned availability

2012-02-04: NetRexx 3.01 will be available via NetRexx.org. This release
is the first with original contributions from the RexxLA development
team; it will have new documentation donated by Mike Cowlishaw, an
updated User Guide and several small enhancements and fixes. Update:
Release Candidate RC2 is available for download, testing and feedback."

Hi Kenneth,

yes it does! In fact, I always use it. You have to make sure you save
the generated java source files (we have a -keepasjava option nowadays)
and use the -comments option to preserve the comments for the javadoc
processor.

Emacs netrexx-mode.el has a special menu option to insert a javadoc
comment, which I use a lot. I imagine something like that can/has been
done for JEdit and Eclipse NetRexx-mode.

Anyway, I find great value in documenting my api's this way - you
cannot remember everything nowadays, even less the things that you
change around a bit before they get their final form.

best regards,

René.

  Interesting question.

Um, Bob, just a few months ago you asked for examples of NetRexx code and the resulting Java code.  I put together several small examples for you and also pointed you at the Java BigDecimal code derived from my NetRexx source code for that class.

Did you not notice the Java code was commented?  Where else would the comments have come from if not from the NetRexx code?
