DrDobbs says NetRexx is inactive WTF...

Fernando Cassia-2
In an otherwise great article on JVM languages at Dr Dobb´s published
November 2012
http://www.drdobbs.com/jvm/a-long-look-at-jvm-languages/240007765

I read "Other languages in this group include Fortress, a
now-abandoned port of Fortran; Mirah, another Ruby knock-off by the
principal developer of JRuby; __and NetRexx, an IBM-sponsored port of
Rexx, which was the first scripting language for Java, but is now
mostly inactive__. "

WTF?

Time to use the comments section, I think...

In reply to this post by Fernando Cassia-2
I have reacted in a short comment:

"As project lead for NetRexx, and President of the Rexx Language Association, I must protest the shoddy treatment bestowed on NetRexx here. The language has been open sourced by IBM in 2011 and has been transferred to the RexxLA; after a copyright-change-release 3.00 a release 3.01 has been done last last year that incorporated important changes like freeing it from the JDK and enabling compilation on JRE-only systems, and compilation from memory buffers. Also, it has been brought up-to-date with some recent Java features - and release 3.02 is around the corner, which will bring even more added compatibilty features. It contains an integrated interpreter and compiler. The last months have seen integration with IDE's like Eclipse and JEdit. Rumours of its demise are premature - as its users will be able to confirm."

It would be good if there would be some indignation added by others - mentioning the website for example.
best regards,
René.

How can we -- together -- spread the Knowledge about and Recognition of NetRexx ?

ThSITC
In reply to this post by George Hovey-2
First, I'm again feeling better, and able to work again in this new Year, 2013  ...

Second, I did change the *topic*, by *intent*   (as always ...) ;-)

I think that Rene and Kermit are doing a fantastic Job, as well as others, but *I*
am having the *personal feeling*, as already said a Year, or so, ago, that we
shall need a so called *concerted* approach to spread the recognition and awareness
of *NetRexx*.

With *concerted approcah* I do mean, that many of us at ibm-netrexx are *living* and *working*
in different countries.

This can and should be taken as a *chance*, *I Think*  ...

Thus, I am *proposing* to use this *new TOPIC* I just did introduce to exchange any/all ideas
here on ibm-netrexx what shall and should and could be done.

Of course, other authorities than I will have to take the final decisions.

But, Frankly Speaking, I did always like it to be an Entrepreneur <grin>

Thus, please do take this my mail as a *contribution* (when possible, at all) ... ;-)

Thomas Schneider.

Hi Rene, and all:

1.) Good reaction from your side, Rene, but:
2.) What we *shall need* might be proper *press releases* of all those good news, in any and all countries
where NetRexx is used (that is, at least, *my personal opinion*)

*Indignation* is a *negative act*!

*We* shall need *Positive acts*, I think ...

My own contribution to the cause:

Groovy was never 'ported' to the JVM: it was developed from scratch as a glue language for Java itself.  That's one.

Secondly, NetRexx is far from 'mostly inactive.'  Visit http://www.netrexx.org for the latest status.  The language is under continuous development with a significant user base, and has applications running on everything from mainframes to Android phones.

I believe that NetRexx has more users, and a broader in-production application base, than several of the 'fringe' languages that have been included here -- and given more (and undeserved, IMHO) treatment.

Please consider a followup article featuring NetRexx: it truly deserves another closer look.

I submitted it for editorial approval at Dr Dobbs' Journal.  It has now been vetted and appears at the link Fernando posted initially (at the bottom).

And rather obviously my comment was posted here, where everyone on the list (including yourself) could see it.  Beyond this mailing list and the magazine's comment section, no: I have not gone further.

Tom.
