netrexx-misc will remain at ntrexx-misc.kenai.com for now.
That really seems not to be a case of poor communication but one of misappraised consequences. would like to read some of that thanked feedback ;-) ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: <[hidden email]> Date: 2010/2/6 Subject: [IMPORTANT UPDATE] More News about the future of Project Kenai To: [hidden email] Gentlepeople, In an effort to get information out to the Kenai community quickly, while trying to manage the integration of our two companies, I think we did a poor job at communicating our plans for Kenai.com to you. I would like to remedy that now. Our strategy is simple. We don't believe it makes sense to continue investing in multiple hosted development sites that are basically doing the same thing. Our plan is to shut down kenai.com and focus our efforts on java.net as the hosted development community. We are in the process of migrating java.net to the kenai technology. This means that any project currently hosted on kenai.com will be able to continue as you are on java.net. We are still working out the technical details, but the goal is to make this migration as seamless as possible for the current kenai.comprojects. So in the meantime I suggest that you stay put on kenai.com and let us work through the details and get back to you later this month. Thanks for your feedback and patience. David ;
Do you think this means that they would accept our NetRexx projects on java.net since they are Java related? Hello David,
first thanks for the info. Second, from Your experience, what is the advantage of Kenai as opposed to Sourceforge? Would that mean that I could java.net as a HOST for Rexx2Nrx source as well in the Future? Thanks in advance when you could enlighten me in this case. Of course, presence of our NetRexx tools at www.java.net might widen the appearance of NetRexx & Rexx2Nrx a lot !! Kermit,
I wouldn't know.. I believe this affaire will still take some twisty turns. Seems to me they hadn't thought the whole thing through before acting. Java.net has always been a java centric oss hosting service, kenai never was any language platform biased. Java.net always had a policy petition-then-approval-or-denying for new projects, kenay allowed free project registration (up to 5) Both services don't really match. A lot of non-javacentric, non java.netsanctioned projects are going to en in java.net site if they go on with this. They existed as separate projects just because they tended to separate audiences to start with. 2010/2/6 Kermit Kiser <[hidden email]> > David ; > > Do you think this means that they would accept our NetRexx projects on > java.net since they are Java related? Thomas,
This is just a matter of personal preference. Here're my own concerns with sourceforge (sf) as oposed to kenai (in this instance): - Usability. Both sites offer similar tools for us poor developers. Admittedly sf offers quite more than kenai. Kenai offers them in a very simple, nicely integrated way. Managing your services at kenai is a breeze compared to sf which is a headache most of the time. I'd rather spending my time fighting issues in my own code than on my sites infrastructure. - Obtrusiveness. sf forces on your project site their own design and branding in an obnoxious way. When you visit an sf project what you're faced to is "Look this is an sf project. If you want to know what is it about read the 3 line description below or dive into the fine tools offered by sf to the project." When you visit a kenai project you're always aware where it is hosted, their tools,branding, etc. are present all the time; just in a much discrete way. Compare netrexx-misc with some other projects there, you'll see what I mean.I *do need* my oss hosting service to support and promote my project, not the other way around if I can chose. Then sf allows you to link your own website but.. why the hell would I want to maintain 2 distinct site for just one single purpose?? - Visibility of your project. This is not sf's fault but is still a concern. Most of the content at sf is crap nowadays: long abandoned projects, project stubs, tests... you name it! Your project is gona be buried in this. In the end you're going to need a main project web page separate from sf with all the information and some link to the project at sf if you want to drive some traffic to it. That's just what RexxLA is doing with their http://www.oorexx.org and http://sourceforge.net/projects/oorexx sites. Again, I'm just an individual without resources to maintain two sites. All in all, I see this kind of site as a tool and I always try to chose the tools which allow me maximize output with the less effort on my part to use/learn the tool itself. 2010/2/6 Thomas Schneider <[hidden email]> > Hello David, > first thanks for the info. > > Second, from Your experience, what is the advantage of Kenai as opposed to > Sourceforge? > Would that mean that I could java.net as a HOST for Rexx2Nrx source as > well in the Future? > > Thanks in advance when you could enlighten me in this case. > > Of course, presence of our NetRexx tools at www.java.net might widen the > appearance of > NetRexx & Rexx2Nrx a lot !! > > Tom. > =============================================================== > David Requena schrieb: > >> netrexx-misc will remain at ntrexx-misc.kenai.com < >> http://ntrexx-misc.kenai.com> for now. >> >> >> That really seems not to be a case of poor communication but one of >> misappraised consequences. >> would like to read some of that thanked feedback ;-) >> >> ---------- Forwarded message ---------- >> From: <[hidden email] <mailto:[hidden email]>> >> Date: 2010/2/6 >> Subject: [IMPORTANT UPDATE] More News about the future of Project Kenai >> To: [hidden email] <mailto:[hidden email]> >> >> >> Gentlepeople, >> >> In an effort to get information out to the Kenai community quickly, while >> trying to manage the integration of our two companies, I think we did a poor >> job at communicating our plans for Kenai.com to you. Hi David,
first I changed the Subject to make this discussion clear. second, as already said, I will put the first FOSS release of Rey (::== Rexx for Java) to my own home-pages, including the ability to DOWNLOAD the recent source of the recent release, as I do have neither the time *nor* are willing to learn all those SVN peculiars. And, frankly speaking, I do *not* need those.... third, may thanks for your opinions and observations (for the group: below). My personal point of view, by the way, is: When Kenai becomes part of java.net, this has much more potential sprideness (if that is the correct term) than 'another project' on source-forge. Thanks again for putting your insights to this community. Tom. ==================================================================.
