Lest anyone wonder why the titular editor of the Project has remained
silent through these discussions of various editors, it is not that I
don't care.

I simply prefer to leave the determination up to those who have vastly
more experience with documentation editors than I.

All I ask is that it be as easy to use as Rexx. ;-)

Also, may I suggest that we establish a new thread for this topic?  I
did not realize that this discussion was going on because I had
collapsed the "RC2 released" thread.

The answer to your question is in Wikipedia and required no more
effort to find than entering "pot kettle" into a Google search.  It is
the first hit, after one for pictures of pots and kettles.

I think you are on to somehting, KK. I do remember copying copies of NetRexxC into many subdirectories trying to make it work last year. As you can see I have several. The latest upgraded one would only be in /rexx/netrexx/bin/. Should I just remove all the extraneous ones?

Is it finding an old version of NetRexx here?:

C:\Documents and Settings\keklein\My Documents\REXX\NetRexx\bin\NetRexxC.jar

Can you give us an updated envirotest and tell us where you put the new version?

I think you are on to somehting, KK. I do remember copying copies of NetRexxC into many subdirectories trying to make it work last year. As you can see I have several. The latest upgraded one would only be in /rexx/netrexx/bin/. Should I just remove all the extraneous ones?

Is it finding an old version of NetRexx here?:

C:\Documents and Settings\keklein\My Documents\REXX\NetRexx\bin\NetRexxC.jar

Can you give us an updated envirotest and tell us where you put the new version?

So any Installer should look for "old stuff" and at least report it for possible removal.

This was copied via the latest Acrobat Reader on XP SP3.

It seems that ligatures like "fi", "ff", "ffl" etc. are not copied over (they seem to be treated as a single character), which is bad. The results can be quite disturbing (e.g. look out for "specication" etc.).

Unless you know already TeX/LaTeX there is no reason to get to it (despite Donald Knuth having created an ingenous formatter for math-savvy documents at a time where graphical user interfaces were science fiction for most people; and one that is practically error-free by now, due to his bounty for people telling him of errors in the past decades).
:-P

If you look through the document above you will see another problem with TeX/LaTeX: overfull boxes, i.e. text running off the right margin (the document probably contains quite a few underfull boxes as well). Usually one has either to correct by hand or create one owns macros (shudder, it is *not* Rexx)!

P.S.: IMHO the learning curve for TeX/LaTeX is far too high as the moment one has to leave http://www.lyx.org/ due to too large/complex documents one has to dive into LaTeX/TeX. This is o.k. for mathematical/statistical applications, but not for documents, which should be editable by anyone who is interested in NetRexx. odt-files can also be edited by all wordprocessors that support the open document format - ODF - specifications.

And this is the reason I was hesitant to suggest it initially.  Without some history with markup it's just too arcane for most.  Even some past HTML experience is helpful -- at least conceptually -- and the WYSIWYG "solutions" are problematic on their own.

I use it rather infrequently, but I keep my copy of "The LaTeX Companion" at my deskside, too.

(La)TeX came up because René pushed my button with "marked up text."

Rony,
You remark

"It seems that ligatures like "fi", "ff", "ffl" etc. are not copied over (they seem to be treated as a single character), which is bad."

Ligatures are glyphs (indivisible pictures) and are represented by single code points.  There are no standard definitions of ligatures, or even what strings should be made available as ligatures, since font designers regard their design as one of the most creative aspects of their work.  Unicode provides for "private use" code points which the designer assigns as he sees fit, and only programs using the original font know how it should be rendered.

This means, IMO, that the appropriate glyph for this code point is simply not known to your (and my) screen font.  [I used Acrobat 9 to analyze the file's font usage and the fonts appear to be proprietary.]

That is, this is not a PDF or Acrobat Reader issue.  I think that any reader will fail the cut/paste test if the viewer cannot display a correct glyph for a captured code point.

George
