NetRexx Frustrations, including NJPipes

Jeff Hennick
I've got a small project that seems made for NJPipes.  Since it has been many years and several machines since I last used it, I thought I'd start from scratch as a "new user."

I first went to what should be the point of contact for any Rexx solution: RexxLA.org:  NOTHING.  In fact their only NetRexx info says there there is a "planned availability September 5th, 2011" (also an earlier announcement of  Open Sourcing).  However, buried in that  short paragraph is a link to NetRexx.Org.

At NetRexx.Org, the first intro page does have a tab-button for "Downloads". NetRexxC (& R) .jars "proto-releases" (?) are available as are an old IBM and a RC2 versions, but nothing else.  But there is a "Tools" tab-button.

There there are an "Emacs Mode" and "Sysutils".

Nary a word about NJPipes to be found, nor anything else.

So, start over and use Google for NJPipes.  The second hit is a reference to the Kenai project.  (Many other references to very early versions, "0.32", etc.  And plumbers in New Jersy.)

And, finally there is a list of some files and directories.  "readme.txt" looks like the right thing!

In there, is "To install create an njpipes directory, cd into it and unzip njpipes.zip."

But, nowhere on the net is to be found any njpipes.zip (0.60).  I suspect that it would contain all the various files listed in the project directory.

(I do have a copy of 0.50, which I have reason to believe is the same except the license, etc.)

So,
  1. Can anyone point me to njpipes.zip (0.60)?
  2. Can we get the NetRexx.Org pages easier to use and more complete? (I have volunteered in the past and gotten "Thanks, but not now"-type responses.)
  3. Could we get RexxLA.Org to recognize NetRexx?
If I were a true new user, I'd be off to Python, or Ruby, or anything else, by now.

Seasons Greetings to All,
Jeff

Google finds several sites with njpipes.zip.

Can anyone point me to njpipes.zip (0.60)?

This seems to be what you're after:
http://kenai.com/nonav/projects/netrexx/sources/netrexxc-repo/show/contrib

Notice the 'njpipes' folder.  In it are things like bin, documentation, readme and several others.  The readme says this is Version 0.60.

If I were a true new user, I'd be off to Python, or Ruby, or anything else, by now.

Don't overlook Groovy, Clojure, and several others!  (I jest, of course.)  I have a couple of "back burner" languages with which I dabble -- mostly to keep my mind fresh, and from which to glean new ideas/concepts.

Anyway, I hope this helps you.
Tom.

Hi Jeff, and all,
that is again one of the many instances that both www.RexxLa.org and/or  www.NetRexx.org do need a *freshup*.

For instance, I'm herewith proposing to make a (small) task-force to UPDATE the IBM NetRexx Red-Book.

When I should/might help, ...

send me a mail!

Merry X-mas.

Tom,

Thank you for your reply.

I should have made it clear that I had tried the Google search and came up with only older versions (looked at each hit on the first two pages).  Adding "0.60" to the search cuts a lot of the clutter with the same negative results.  The one exception is the Kenai Project, which is it's "home."  But there, I can open the sub-directories and download any individual files I want, but nowhere that I can find is the full .ZIP package.  Downloading one by one would get old in a hurry.

I must be missing something.

Sure...

Use this svn fetch command:

svn co https://svn.netrexx.org/svn/netrexx~netrexxc-repo .

You end up with the latest netrexx and the njpipes you are looking for....

That's because the Kenai site is an SVN repository.  If you return to the njpipes page, in the upper right corner you'll see the "Checkout URL" link.  Clicking that will get you this:

https://svn.kenai.com/svn/netrexx~netrexxc-repo

Point your SVN client at that URL and have at it.  But, a tutorial in SVN usage is outside the scope of this note.  Learning to fetch code using SVN is left as an exercise for the reader (as they say).

Re: NetRexx Frustrations, including NJPipes

Jeff Hennick
Tom,

Thanks again.  I am currently neck deep in trying to understand the Tortoise client.  Their  Getting Started  stuff has me creating a local Repository, etc.

All,
To make my point clear:  The NetRexx.Org site should have the current "supported" version as a plain ZIP file for downloading.  (Yes, I, who expect to be adding pipeline stages to the package, will need to learn the full SVN stuff.  But a new user definitely does not.)  Even if this means a little manual updating when versions change.  [Ideally, SVN has a way so we can have a "Download most current version"-button that requires no extra work.]

As for using links that look like a WWW clickable link but that blowup when a browser tries to access them, I have some very harsh words.

I'm going to persist and get it, but any real world new user would likely have had time to learn all of Python's syntax (no mean feat) before getting to download a simple file here.

Jeff (Feeling bad just now, despite Tom's wish/order.)

Jeff, as far as I do know,

Rene Vincent Jansen *did* already put up the *most recent available* version up to www.netrexx.org.

May I therefore propose, that you do use this public available (open source) version as a starter?

Then, when we do find any problems there, we can (together?) fix it, when we like :-)

Anyway, keep us all informed with your findings, please.

PIPES have been a very important CMS addition to 'classic Rexx', and I think we should keep the train rolling
(as far as we can) !

All the best to all of you, anyway,
Thomas.

Re: NetRexx Frustrations, including NJPipes

rvjansen
In reply to this post by Jeff Hennick
NJPipes, in the RexxLA version, has not been released yet, this is why there is no downloadable file yet on NetRexx.org
I will put it there as soon as I can; it seems to work ok and the new documentation is as good as ready. Using svn and building your own is entirely possible though. As always, just using the command line clients is a lot easier than any gui tools.

The tools to quickly set up NetRexx.org are not very friendly to collaborative efforts. RexxLA, the site, needs reorganizing. Both sites require use of svn however, and any help is welcome. You could start by just suggesting improvements.

The kenai project site just keeps the sources and building materials, and it is not common practice to keep finished packages in the source tree; the file you found is meant to be part of the finished package - this seems obvious from its context.

It seems that this whole exchange could have been: "When is njpipes going to be released?'", to which I could have answered: "Great, now it seems that there is some interest in it, very soon!"

For immediate needs, there is a now a pre-built version at https://public.me.com/rvjansen/

best regards,

René Jansen.

Hello Jerry, and all ...

I just followed the link Jerry gave (just for curiousity, I alread did
know it)

and got:

*Dieser Verbinddung wird nicht vertraut*   (German message)

which essentially does mean:

*this is not a trusted connection*

Wouldn't it be the time to get this out NetRexx REPO a *trusted connection*
Mr. President Rene Vincent Jansen ?

*Or* is this a KENAI problem ?

Sorry to bother you with those details ...

Hello Tom,

what the hell is GIT? Never heard!

By the way, I'm having a hard time too to learn (stepwise) SVN!

The funny thing with computers (and life) seems to be:

Everytime you think you do *know* something,
it keeps changing ...

(Worst example is Microsoft DOS and Windows!)

Mr. Vester wrote a book, Years ago, called *Die geheimen Verführer* in german (don't know the
english title), where he did write about

*Planned Obsolence*

Obviously, this still keep to be a major mechanism in Capitalism!

Greetings,
Thomas.

PS: Backup copy to my *other* mail address for my personal files for my upcoming book ... :-)

May I, please, underline Jeff's point:

The NetRexx.org site should support the possibility to download a simple ZIP File with the source, and a JAR File with the classes.
*or* the JAR is simply in the ZIP ....

At every major release, the ZIP and JAR should be synchronized.

Kermit Kiser is doing this already very well with his *NetRexx after3.01* packages there on Kenai, Project *NetRexx PLUS*.

I must admit, that I'm already exlusively using Kermit's after 3.01 version, as he did implement the ability
to SUBCLASS class Rexx (which is NOT possible in NetRexx301.RC2 :-()

By the way,

when is now NetRexx 3.01 planned to be released?

Time for progress again, I am thinking, as except Alan Harper's issue (which has been fixed by Kermit instantly)
no other bugs have been reported, *neither* at the Keinai's devolopers group *nor* at ibm-netrexx.

Thus:

Time to release officially Netrexx 3.01 start of 2012 (January, when possible), *please* :-)

Meanwhile relax with your family during the X-mas holiday, and all the best to all of you :-)

Thomas.

Tom.
(Don't feel bad: I had to scratch my head for a long, long time before I could figure out GIT (a similar tool).]

Hi Rene,

thanks for making this available so quickly :-)

Seasons Greetings to All,
Jeff

Maybe for you Thomas, but you might want to consider that you have wasted the time of many people who follow this list.

You are wrong, Thomas.  By asking this way you consume both my time and yours.  A quick Google, which is precisely what I had to do to obtain the URL, was all that was necessary on your part.  Instead, you chose to enslave me to do your bidding.  Not nice.

It isn't always the holiday season.  Don't always expect obedience to your command.

Buon Natale!

It's interesting too that "git" was allegedly chosen by Linus Torvalds for it's link to a British slang term for a "stupid or unpleasant person."  [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Git_(software)].

I wasn't going to chime in on this but Thomas has drained the holiday

Fully agree, Tom.  But you are "an enabler" by doing his homework for
him.  If we all stop doing it for him, he may learn to do it himself.

Am I the only one who saw the blissfully ignorant irony in Thomas'
exhortations to update the website, repackage NJPipes, and release
NetRexx 3.01, immediately followed by "relax with your family during
the X-mas holiday"?

Apparently to Thomas, the efforts of others on his behalf are free,
effortless, and instantaneous.  But he has no time to Google the
answers to his own questions.

Bah!

I knew that when I responded, but I also "enabled" this subsequent
discussion which has value, I think.  And, as I said, my response was my
Holiday present to Thomas.  Christmas comes but once a year.

I wish the happiest of holiday seasons to one and all!
