Renting a car in Mexico

Leinfors
Yo, planning a trip through the Yucatan, want to hit the cenotes and ruins at my own pace, but I keep hearing horror stories about corrupt cops and rental scams. Anyone actually done it without getting fleeced?

Re: Renting a car in Mexico

Cool
The Yucatan is one of the best spots to drive yourself, the highway is smooth, and you can hit Chichen Itza before the tour buses even roll in, but you need to book with a legit provider that includes full insurance upfront, otherwise the counter will upsell you double the rate on arrival. Plenty of tourists rent a car in Mexico every day without issues, just film the entire vehicle before leaving the lot and keep some pesos handy for unexpected tolls. You can browse the options and lock in a ride before you fly at https://getrentacar.com/en-US/mexico .

Never hand over your passport as a deposit, a photocopy or a small cash hold is standard, and any place demanding the original is about to run a scam on you.
