Visual Age Netrexx?

Andreas Zieritz-2
Does someone know about any progress in Visual Age for Netrexx? I've got
a e-mail some months ago that they are working on a proposal - any news
from 'insiders'?

I'm not an insider, more of an "low orbiter", but I too am very interested in
this area of NetRexx. The very last thing I heard was that NetRexx was being
"considered" as a scripting language for a possible future version of Visual
Age for Java...

Personally, I'd much rather see a Visual Age for NetRexx being considered, but
right about now ANYTHING would be better that the current state of affairs...

Also, one GREAT idea I had proposed to Mike Cowlishaw, was the possibility of
including NetRexx with the next version of the IBM JDK. Mike kindly informed me
that he had already pursued that front and it didn't pan out very well.

Hmm... Say Mike, would it be a worth while activity if, We the Users contacted
the decision makers, on the possibility of including NetRexx in the next JDK?
If you think it'd help, what's the email address... I'm ready to write... :')

Just make sure that the Netrexx compiler is bundled with the most
expensive version of the Visual Age for Java product so that only the
really dedicated can get it.

I.e.: the same thing you'll did for the bytecode to native code compiler.

Well, here I can imagine why they don't want to do it. It smells like
IBM would like to fragment Java - it would look like as one of those
ideas from Microsoft (don't they call it 'cool'?) or HP (they had some
other coffee-name). We know, Netrexx isn't that kind of stuff - others
might think different about that.

I don't have any problems with the fact that I have to download and
install Netrexx. What I really do want is a graphical frontend. The
editor I use is superb (Warp's EPM) - designing GUI's is a nightmare.

Me, too. IBM doesn't have a tradition in supplying things for the
masses. Netrexx is kind of different here, it's cheap, easy to use and
stable. But to get it more popular the entrance level has to be lower -
we need the frontend.

I suppose that could be possible. However, the single best way to defeat that
thinkning is distributing NetRexx with the IBM JDK. All you ahve to do, is
demonstrate the power and ease of use that NetRexx affords and... you will
have sold another customer on NetRexx. Adding to this, a powerful IDE like
VAJ... IMHO it'd be a real winner.

Same here. I've looke at a few tools that ARE available, but nothing I've
found has a "finished feel". WingEditor has been the BEST of the bunch and it's
not even a GUI interface, but it does understand NetRexx syntax. The next best
is VisualNetRexx by Dion. I wish I had the money to pay this guy to finish
this project! He's a top shelf programmer, with a top shelf product... He just
doesn't have the resources to complete his project. The next best, and it
really isn't a NetRexx solution, but a FAIR graphical designer, is JForge. I'm
able to layout my GUI (implemented in swing), convert the generated java to
NetRexx an then hand glue my code into the GUI component... Yeah, it's a bit
kludgey, but hey... it works. The only problem is, the company developing
JForge has no interest in NetRexx, no interest in anything but the JDK1.2 and
are as friendly as hell... Who knows, maybe someday...

They do, but a few squeaking wheels may get some grease...

Re: Visual Age Netrexx?

I just wanted to pass on a couple of url's for some nice tools that I found on
the web, just incase any of us missed them.

**
JavaComm 2.0 has been ported to the OS/2 platform and can be found at
www.aquilasys.com. Includes the java comm .jar and some source/demo programs to
look at. The demos ported to NetRexx easily and works quite well with all of my
own routines. It's not a 100% port of the sun API, but all the important stuff
works. OS/2 only. :')

**
JAX is now at vesion level 5.1. This tools is terrific at processing your java
into jar files, obfuscating and compression. It has a few more features than
that, but these are the main ones that interest most people. Available at
www.alphaqworks.ibm.com. FWIW, this is the first version that runs 100%,
providing full features, on my OS/2 box and the JDK117. Grab it now, it may
not be available in the future. 100% java. Remember HPJC? I use this rexx
script to execute it from the commandline:

set CLASSPATH=d:\java\jax51;%CLASSPATH%
java jax %1 %2 %3 %4 %5 %6 %7 %8 %9

**
JForge, the GUI designer, is about as nice as I've seen them. Design GUI's
using swing widgets, generates java and classfiles. Unfortunately, does not
generate NetRexx yet, but I'm working on the company to get this done. I've
been told, "maybe". They seem to like the language, time will tell. For now,
JForge is good tool, non-the-less. :') Available at www.tek-tools.com. 100%
java. Requires Swing. I use this to execute JForge:

@echo off

set JFORGE_HOME=D:\JAVA\JFORGE256
SET SWING_HOME=D:\JAVA\SWING103

@echo on
set CLASSPATH=%JFORGE_HOME%\jforge.jar;%JFORGE_HOME%\public.jar;%CLASSPATH%;%JFORGE_HOME%\java.jar;%SWING_HOME%\swingall.jar;

java uk.co.demon.sspl.jforge.Builder

Have fun, guys/gals...

We probably won't see any VA for Netrexx/Java_with_NetRexx as long as
the VA-programmers struggling with e.g. inner classes-support - or as
long as the one-man-NetRexx team is more accurate as the whole
VA-team.

It has been a nightmare to convince the VA4J-programmer in the team,
that the bug is in VA4Java and not in NetRexx.
I guess this is part of the trouble, Mike is faced with.

VA is a pretty tool, but NetRexx is at least bugfree.
