envirotest.class / Installer

Bruce Skelly
Hi Kermit, All,

It just occurred to me that your envirotest.class program might make the basis for a NetRexx uninstall tool, since it did such a good job of finding all the .jar files.

Perhaps the installer should leave behind a script, program, or something that would allow the user to uninstall NetRexx.

I have added this suggestion to the collection of NetRexx Installer
ideas/suggestions on Google Docs.  I have also published that collection
to the Web.  The long-form URL is:

https://docs.google.com/document/pub?id=1FybxAua5YCnEPTnDMiQU-LyECBWG3cXQRp9zne6U-q4

or (short form):

http://goo.gl/Rpjaq

Note: The published version is just an HTML rendering of the flat text
file, posted to a unique Web URL ... just like a "regular" webpage, but
limited in content.  Even if you might not have had permission to view
the original (which everyone reading this already did), you certainly
now have rights to see the published copy.

Tom.

Bruce,
Good point.  In the Windows world it's considered extremely bad taste not to provide an uninstaller.

Like installation, uninstall processes are OS specific.  On windows, users
typically go to "Add or Remove Programs" via the control panel, and I
assume that the other two have their customary methods - RPMs, etc.

The primary, fundamental decision with regard to installers is if the
conventional system installers will be used.  If not, I believe users will
have the reaction "Why didn't they do it the right way, like every one
else?"

Great idea! I know I am reluctant to try software packages that don't
have an uninstall.

One concern: Sometimes I like an install to replace the old version of
an application but sometimes I want to install two+ versions at once for
testing or comparison purposes. Likewise uninstall should be by version.
