As far as I can tell, they are identical here on the east coast of the US.

BTW, I am honored to be quoted on the Examples page.  I had forgotten
that I pulled that little stunt.  It certainly made the point, though.

I'm happy to report acceptable performance from not-so-sunny Southern California.  (Tested with Firefox, Safari and Chrome on Mac OS X).  Fancy tab scrolling works on Safari and Chrome.  Firefox; not so much.

Hit send too early, posting should read: acceptable performance to Amazon site...

www.netrexx.org is not responding right now so I can't give a review.

I only have a 1Mbit cable-modem (DOCSIS 2.0) broadband connection here.

Both sites load awfully slow. I´m not sure what is downloading  in the
background, but something needs to be compressed, or loaded afterwards
after the main text is displayed.

A Splash screen (Welcome to Netrexx.org, loading..."), even if
annoying for some, would help offset these delays while the rest of
the page loads.

See this:
http://www.dynamicdrive.com/dynamicindex3/dhtmlsplash.htm

While Amazon.com cloud is interesting, I wonder if you have tried
other popular hosting destinations...

For other projects I´ve had great results with a shared Linux hosting
account at "Site Five", which is co-located in one of Colorado´s
biggest datacenters. At less than $10/month, their shared hosting
plans are a bargain.

http://ho.io/Site5

Specially for what is provided in terms of point-and-click
configuration ("Fantastico") of third party scripts (like Forums,
PhpBB, etc).

The bad news is that Site5 doesn´t do Java servlets.
If you instead prefer a Java based server, I´d suggest Kattare.com

I have no relation with Kattare.com other than being a long time
customer since 2001 to 2009.

Plus, you´d be contracting a small business owner, or a family company
if you prefer. Ethan Burnside is the company founder.

http://www.servlets.com/isps/servlet/ISPReviewView?id=33

It is based in Oregon, USA.

That´s as far as my hosting knowledge goes. Besides other options that
burned me like crosswinds.net which you should avoid like the plague.

That´s as far as my knowledge goes.

If you prefer a UK based hosting, I can only vouch for GigaTux
http://www.gigatux.com/

Rene,

I get these numbers from Firebug in Firefox.  They are each from a single run of each server, so I make no representation they are "average" or the like.  (Actually, I did each twice and this is the better of the two.  That 10-seconds is right.)  The times reported are for the finishing of each download and include the time before trying to download do to thread limits.  I have picked out the "max" of each as that would be when the last one have completed downloading.

Location: East coast USA (western NY State).  Time: late Saturday afternoon.  The times do not include another 2-seconds or so to render the page.

Jeff,

thank you for this research. Based on it, and other reports, I have redirected www.netrexx.org to the cloud - specially now the first drop of the binary 3.00 release is downloadble.
Maybe we should have a first page with <lowsrc> so it first loads a static version or some other trick. Although under a second seems quite acceptable.

best regards,

René Jansen.

NR Website coding Was: netrexx site amazon ec2 test

Jeff Hennick
In reply to this post by Jeff Hennick
I have taken a look at the website source.  The "problem" is they are downloading all 7 pages, with the images,  before displaying the first one!  This speeds up changing from one internal page to another, but at a large up front time cost.  [I'm not convinced this is a good trade off.]

So, it would not be possible to hand do just the first one.  I have to withdraw my offer.

Re: NetRexx 3.00 initial testing results (was netrexx site amazon ec2 test)

Kermit Kiser

René -

Thanks for posting the 3.00 NetRexxC.jar binary. I have done some preliminary testing with NetRexxScript under jEdit using various test programs and so far the results look identical to 2.05 except for copyright and version notices of course. Congratulations! I will test with Android applications when a NetRexxR.jar is available.

One question - the 3.00 jar file is much larger than the 2.05 jar file (454KB vs 348KB), largely due to the inclusion of a "diag" directory. The individual NetRexx classes are a bit larger also. It looks like maybe your build process has added some testing code. Can that be removed?

Jeff,

thank you for this research.

It says 'Loading' for quite a while, here (maybe on the other site, too).

btw, the Examples page shows a date.nrx and .java -- but the "console log" is
compiling hello.nrx?

Geographic location is only one factor. What is your contracted
speed?. Ie go to www.speedtest.net

I'll try to trim down the 'loading' part a bit more. At this stage I think the scene transitions force the loading of all graphics in an early stage, and I'll try to do something about that.

hello.nrx - odd, isn't it? It was like that where I snagged it from. I'l correct it, to let the comment reflect the filename - although on itself, this will work. Thanks for observing this.

René.
